What Minnesota law requires

Minnesota State Fire Code sets minimum requirements for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in all single-family homes.

Smoke alarms must be installed:

  • Inside every bedroom
  • In the hallway outside sleeping areas
  • On every level of the home including the basement

Carbon monoxide alarms must be installed:

  • Within 10 feet of every bedroom
  • On every level of the home where fuel-burning appliances are present
  • In all Minnesota single-family homes and apartments

When to replace your alarms

An alarm that passes a test button press may not detect smoke or CO quickly enough when it counts. Sensors degrade over time regardless of whether the alarm still sounds on a test.

  • Smoke alarms: replace every 10 years from the date of manufacture
  • Carbon monoxide alarms: replace every 5 to 7 years depending on the manufacturer

The manufacture date is printed on the back of every alarm. If it is missing or unreadable, replace the alarm. When in doubt, replace it — the cost of a new alarm is negligible compared to what it protects.

Replacing and testing batteries

For alarms that use replaceable batteries, replace the battery once a year. A good rule of thumb is to change batteries when you change your clocks for daylight saving time — twice a year gives you an extra margin.

A chirping alarm usually means the battery is low. Replace the battery first. If chirping continues after a fresh battery, the alarm is likely near the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced.

Hardwired alarms include a battery backup — test that backup battery annually as well.

Why interconnected alarms are safer

When one hardwired interconnected alarm detects smoke or carbon monoxide, every alarm in the home sounds simultaneously. This matters most when a fire starts in a part of the house where no one is — a basement, a laundry room, a garage. Your family gets the warning regardless of where they are in the home.

Hardwired alarms include battery backup if power goes out and are often required during remodeling or major electrical work.

  • Photoelectric alarms respond faster to slow, smoldering fires

If a fresh battery does not stop the chirping, the alarm is likely near the end of its useful life. Check the manufacture date on the back. If it is more than 10 years old for smoke or 7 years old for CO, replace the alarm. A chirp that continues after a new battery usually means the sensor itself is failing.
What should I do if my carbon monoxide alarm goes off?
Leave the home immediately with everyone in it and call 911 from outside. Do not re-enter until emergency services confirm it is safe. Common CO sources in homes include gas furnaces, gas water heaters, fireplaces, gas stoves, and vehicles running in attached garages.
Are hardwired alarms worth the cost over battery-only alarms?
For most homes, yes. Hardwired interconnected alarms provide whole-home protection — when one sounds, all sound. Battery-only alarms protect only the immediate area. The cost difference is modest.
